Beyond Individuation To Discipleship:
A Directory For Those Who Give The Spiritual Exercises

Rev. George J. Schemel, S.J. (1930-2000) was the founder and director of the Institute for Contemporary Spirituality of the University of Scranton at the time of his death.  He was also founder and for 12 years director of the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth at Wernersville, Pa., and founder and director of ISECP (Ignatian Spiritual Exercises for the Corporate Person).  He spent his lifetime as a priest, spiritual director, teacher, facilitator, organizational development consultant, writer, and joyous participant in the Jesuit community.   His work in giving programs on the interface of spirituality, psychology, and modern business practice and his directing retreats of the Spiritual Exercise of St. Ignatius took him to Kenya, Nigeria, Japan, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Canada and United States.  He is the co-author of Facing Your Type and the author of Facing Other Types in addition of other articles on psychology and spirituality.

Sr. Judith A. Roemer is a spiritual director, teacher, and writer.  She worked with Fr. Schemel, S.J. for 29 years on the staff of the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth at Wernersville, PA, as assistant director of the Institute for Contemporary Spirituality of the University of Scranton, and as president of ISECP.  She is author of Growing with Type and several articles on spirituality and psychology.  She works as a teacher, supervisor, organizational consultant, and facilitates meetings and workshops in Ignatian spirituality.  She has worked in Africa, England, Canada, and the United States in catholic and ecumenical settings.

Together George and Judy have published a 16-part, 20-hour video series, Ignatian Spirituality and the Directed Retreat.  With the ISECP staff they have authored and edited a three-volume work, Focusing Group Energies: Common Ground for Leadership, Organization, and Spirituality and Operation Wisdom, exploring spirituality beyond the mid-life crisis.  For the past 29 years they have co-facilitated numerous internships for spiritual directors, workshops, retreats, and projects in Ignatian spirituality, especially communal discernment for decision-making groups.
