Chapter

The
Hierarchy of Values in the Spiritual Exercises
Chapter 16 presents a hierarchy of values that are represented in the Spiritual
Exercises. Recognition of this structure gives us a deep insight into the
apostolic spirituality articulated by St. Ignatius
| For
Chapter 16 --
it will be helpful
to review the entire text of the Exercises and note the over- all
rhythms and dynamics of the entire text.

Pray
and Reflect:
-
Freedom plus
revelation is faith.
-
The Holy Spirit
enlightens a person after the manner of his or her recollection.
-
Chesterson
says, A tree must grow straight in order to bend. How does knowing the
hierarchy of values allow a director to be more flexible?
-
Accept and
reflect first; be critical afterwards.
|
Wonder
and Discuss:
-
Distinguish mythic, structural,
and process values. What is helpful about the distinctions?
-
The Exercises have an
internal logic.
-
How might one be a better
director by appreciating the interplay of values in the Spiritual Exercises?
-
Freedom implies a willingness
and ability to change.
-
Imagination is the ability
to integrate the intellectual and the affective into the life-giving and
revelatory symbol.
-
Whether one orders these
ten values in logical order, the order of dignity, or the order of execution,
the order of these values will be the same.
